As generative AI sweeps through browsers, Mozilla has chosen to return the "choice" to users. Recently, Mozilla officially announced that the desktop version of Firefox 148 will be released on February 24th. The core highlight is the introduction of a new "AI Controls" panel.
This move stems from the polarized user attitudes towards AI in community feedback. In the upcoming new version, Firefox provides a one-click switch to block AI-enhanced features. Once enabled, the browser will completely disable all generative AI features in the current and future versions, and also block related pop-up notifications and marketing promotions, offering a quiet digital space for users who prefer traditional browsing experiences.

For users who are not opposed to AI, Firefox offers a detailed modular management solution. Users can enable five core functions as needed in the panel: including intelligent translation for multilingual browsing, an accessibility tool that automatically generates descriptions for PDF images, AI tag management for smartly grouping web pages, preview of link content before clicking, and a sidebar robot integrated with mainstream models such as ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, and more.
Mozilla emphasized that in today's era where AI is becoming increasingly pervasive, respecting user preferences is more important than ever. Currently, the "AI Controls" feature has already been launched in the Firefox Nightly test version, allowing tech-savvy users to experience it first.
Key points:
🛡️ One-click complete blocking: Firefox 148 will allow users to completely turn off all AI features and related promotional pop-ups, ensuring an uninterrupted browsing experience.
🧩 Modular freedom of choice: Users can independently control the activation or deactivation of five AI components, including intelligent translation, PDF image description, tab smart grouping, and more.
🤖 Integration of mainstream models: The sidebar robot supports integration with various top AI models, including ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, Gemini, and Mistral.
