Leading development tool vendor JetBrains announced that its entire series of IDEs now have native integration with OpenAI's Codex model. Starting from version 2025.3, developers can directly call this powerful coding engine within the AI chat function to handle more complex real-world development tasks.

The biggest highlight of this integration is its flexibility. Users can not only use the native JetBrains AI subscription, but also activate Codex by linking their own ChatGPT account or entering an OpenAI API key. Several mainstream IDEs, including IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, WebStorm, and Rider, have already enabled this feature.
Unlike traditional code completion, Codex in the IDE functions more like an autonomous "programming assistant." Developers can assign permissions based on their needs — from simple code Q&A to granting it access to the web or even allowing it to run terminal commands autonomously. This "agent"-style interaction allows the AI to participate throughout the entire process of logical reasoning, action execution, and code iteration, while developers can adjust the reasoning depth, generation speed, and cost budget in the chat interface according to the task difficulty.
To attract more developers to experience it, JetBrains has also launched a limited-time offer: starting from January 22, accessing the Codex agent through JetBrains AI will provide a free usage quota until the promotional quota is exhausted.
