On its 25th anniversary, the parent company of Wikipedia, the Wikimedia Foundation announced a major strategic partnership. The organization has reached agreements with Amazon, Meta, and the emerging AI search company Perplexity, which will access the official data interfaces provided by Wikimedia Enterprise through paid arrangements.

This collaboration aims to provide high-quality, verified data sources for training large language models. Compared to the traditional "web scraping" model of collecting large amounts of web data, Wikimedia Enterprise offers a more scalable and human-curated knowledge distribution channel. This not only ensures that AI platforms can reference more accurate information when answering user queries, but also highlights the importance of protecting the value of human collaborative knowledge in the AI era.

Wikimedia Foundation's Chief Product and Technology Officer Selena Deckelmann stated that in today's rapidly developing AI environment, the human wisdom represented by Wikipedia is more critical than ever. Through this commercial attempt, Wikipedia hopes to maintain its position as the core hub of global human knowledge collaboration for the next 25 years and beyond.

Currently, this partner list already includes several industry giants such as Google and Nomic. Although the specific financial terms have not been disclosed, this marks that content producers are actively seeking sustainable development momentum from data licensing in response to the impact of generative AI.
