According to a report by Bloomberg, Dario Amodei, CEO of the US artificial intelligence company Anthropic, made important remarks at the recent New York Times DealBook summit, warning that the investment risks of some AI companies are currently too high. He pointed out that although investment in the industry is increasing rapidly, many companies face significant financial risks when they commit billions of dollars to develop and maintain AI systems.
Amodei mentioned that the industry is facing a complex situation. On one hand, building advanced AI systems requires substantial investments in infrastructure such as data centers, which often take several years to build; on the other hand, the economic value of AI growth is uncertain, and there are still many unknowns about its future development. He said that while Anthropic is committed to managing risks responsibly, some companies in the industry seem to be engaging in short-term speculation.
Although Amodei did not directly name specific companies, his comments clearly drew attention to large companies such as OpenAI, Meta, and Google. These companies have recently significantly increased their investments in data centers and chips to drive the development of more advanced AI systems. For example, OpenAI has pledged to invest up to $140 billion in AI infrastructure, which has raised concerns about the possibility of a bubble in the AI market.
Although Anthropic is also increasing its investment, its funding scale is clearly lower than that of OpenAI. Recently, Anthropic announced an investment of $50 billion in multiple locations in the United States to build its first custom data center. Founded in 2021, Anthropic was established by former OpenAI employees and is committed to becoming a more responsible AI manager, focusing mainly on the enterprise market rather than the consumer market. In September this year, Anthropic's valuation reached $183 billion, successfully completing a $13 billion financing round.
