WordPress recently launched an experimental artificial intelligence development tool called Telex. Although it is still in the testing phase, it has already been applied in real website construction. At the recent "WordPress Annual Report" meeting, Matt Mullenweg, co-founder of the WordPress project and CEO of Automattic, demonstrated several practical application cases of Telex.

Telex is a "contextual coding" tool introduced by WordPress in the age of artificial intelligence, aimed at helping developers generate Gutenberg blocks more efficiently. These blocks are the fundamental elements that make up WordPress websites. Mullenweg showcased several examples built by community creator Nick Hamze using Telex, including a price comparison tool, a price calculator, and real-time store hours functionality.
At the meeting, Mullenweg demonstrated a price comparison tool, pointing out that interactive web elements like these used to require developers to spend a lot of time and money to customize, but can now be generated by Telex in just a few seconds. In addition, Telex has also been used to add real-time operating hours, phone numbers, and map links in the title area of websites.
In other demonstrations, developers used Telex to create a carousel of partner logos, customized price tools, Google Calendar integration, and a grid layout to display articles of the same height on the WordPress homepage. Mullenweg mentioned: "In the past, developing these features could cost thousands to tens of thousands of dollars, but now we can complete them with very little cost in the browser, which is really surprising."
Additionally, developer Tammie Lister uses Telex every day to create a new Gutenberg block, including a playable ASCII version of Tetris and a Halloween-themed block. The demonstration of Telex is taking place alongside other AI-related projects of WordPress. Mullenweg also mentioned some new architectural developments, such as the capability API and the MCP adapter, which will help WordPress better integrate into AI workflows.
Mullenweg also stated that WordPress will introduce some evaluation criteria in 2026 to help test AI models on the WordPress platform for various tasks, such as replacing plugins and editing text.
