Warner Music Group (WMG) has announced a settlement with the AI music generation platform Udio over copyright infringement litigation and signed a licensing agreement to jointly launch an AI music creation subscription platform based on licensed music, expected to launch in 2026.
The new platform will allow users to remix, cover, and create original songs using the voices and musical works of participating artists. WMG emphasized that all participants will receive credit and compensation. This is the second "Big Three" record company to reach a settlement and collaborate with Udio, following Universal Music Group, marking a significant shift in the traditional music industry from litigation to licensing agreements in the AI music field.
Udio's current products will continue to operate in a "restricted environment" until the new platform launches. During this period, measures such as audio fingerprinting and content filtering will be used to ensure compliance with generated content. WMG's participating artists include Lady Gaga, Coldplay, The Weeknd, and others. Once the platform launches, it will provide a legal pathway for AI music creation and open up new revenue streams for artists.
