Chip giant NVIDIA and tech giant Microsoft announced on Tuesday that they will invest up to $15 billion in artificial intelligence startup Anthropic. NVIDIA has committed to investing up to $1 billion, while Microsoft has committed to investing up to $500 million. Microsoft currently holds a 27% stake in OpenAI, a competitor of Anthropic.
This deal is part of a comprehensive agreement, under which Anthropic has promised to purchase $3 billion worth of Microsoft cloud computing services and adopt NVIDIA's latest version of chip technology.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said in an online video announcing the deal, "We will increasingly become each other's customers. We will use Anthropic's models, and they will use our infrastructure. We will enter the market together to help customers realize the value of AI."
This investment marks a major shift in the generative AI landscape. In this field, competition between OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, and competitors such as Anthropic is intensifying. Google also released its latest Gemini model on Tuesday.
Anthropic, based in California, was founded in 2021 by former employees of OpenAI and positions itself as a company that prioritizes the safety of AI development. Its flagship product is the Claude chatbot and series of models.
As more Wall Street analysts talk about the AI bubble, the stock price of NVIDIA, the world's largest company by market capitalization, fell 3%, part of a general sell-off in the tech sector. Microsoft's stock fell nearly 3.5%.
According to sources cited by CNBC, this latest investment has valued Anthropic at $350 billion, making it one of the most valuable companies in the world. OpenAI's recent valuation is $500 billion.
