OpenAI has announced that it will pilot the ChatGPT Group Chat in selected markets such as South Korea and New Zealand—this is a new form of conversation function where multiple people can interact with AI together, which is the first time for ChatGPT.
This feature runs on the GPT-5.1 model released yesterday. Unlike traditional conversation modes, users in group chats can communicate freely, and only when ChatGPT actually responds will it count against the rate limit, avoiding hitting usage limits due to frequent interactions among multiple users.

OpenAI stated that the group chat feature aims to enable users to achieve human collaboration and AI co-creation through shared conversation spaces. Whether it's friends planning a trip together, colleagues discussing a plan, or multiple people brainstorming, all can be directly completed with ChatGPT in the group chat.
Notably, ChatGPT in group chats will automatically decide when to speak and when to stay silent based on the conversation context. If users want it to participate immediately, they just need to mention "ChatGPT" in their message. In addition, the system supports more natural interaction methods, such as replying with emojis or quoting group members' avatars—which allows ChatGPT to generate interesting images with members' avatars in the group chat.
OpenAI emphasized that it will continue to iterate based on feedback from early markets and plans to expand the ChatGPT group chat feature to more regions in the future.
