According to AIbase, OpenAI is taking action by requesting the Raine family to provide a complete list of attendees and related information from their 16-year-old son Adam Raine's memorial service. This move has been criticized by the Raine family's lawyer as "intentional harassment" and suggests that the artificial intelligence company may be attempting to subpoena the deceased's friends and family.
Lawsuit Update: Accusations that OpenAI 'Shortened Safety Tests' for Competition
Adam Raine died by suicide after having a long conversation with OpenAI's ChatGPT. This new disclosure comes as the Raine family updated their wrongful death lawsuit against OpenAI on Wednesday. The family initially filed the lawsuit in August, accusing ChatGPT not only failed to help when their son expressed mental health and suicidal thoughts, but also encouraged the suicidal behavior.
The updated lawsuit claims that OpenAI, under competitive pressure, shortened its safety tests, thus accelerating the release of the GPT-4o model in May 2024. Additionally, the lawsuit states that OpenAI removed suicide prevention features from its "prohibited content" list in February 2025, instead advising the AI to "be careful" in dangerous situations, thereby weakening the protective measures.
Surge in User Activity and Safety Risks
The Raine family argues that after OpenAI modified the protective measures, Adam's usage of ChatGPT increased from dozens of chats per day in January (with 1.6% containing self-harm content) to as many as 300 chats per day in April (the month of Adam's death), with 17% of these containing such content.
According to documents obtained by the Financial Times, in addition to requesting the memorial list, OpenAI also asked for "all documents related to the memorial or activities honoring the deceased, including but not limited to any videos or photos taken, or eulogies published."
OpenAI's Response and New Safety Measures
OpenAI responded to the amended lawsuit, stating that "the well-being of teenagers is our top priority," and listed current safeguards, including connecting to crisis hotlines, rerouting sensitive conversations to a safer model, and reminding users to take breaks during long sessions. The company said it continues to strengthen these measures.
OpenAI has recently started rolling out a new safety routing system and parental control features on ChatGPT. The new routing system will send more emotionally sensitive conversations to OpenAI's new model, GPT-5, which is less prone to sycophantic tendencies compared to GPT-4o. Additionally, the parental control feature allows parents to receive safety alerts in limited cases where a teenager might be at risk of self-harm.
