Adobe recently announced a new service - Adobe AI Foundry, aimed at providing enterprise customers with customized AI models called Firefly. Through this service, Adobe will collaborate with enterprises to restructure and retrain the Firefly model to meet specific customer needs. These Foundry versions of the model differ from regular customized Firefly models, as they can understand multiple concepts, while standard models are limited to a single concept. Additionally, Foundry models are multimodal, offering a broader range of applications.

The goal of Adobe AI Foundry is to respond to the demand for more complex customized versions of Firefly from enterprise customers. Hannah Elsakr, vice president at Adobe, stated that enterprise needs are often complex, so Adobe will take charge of restructuring rather than handing over control to the customers. The intellectual property (IP) of the enterprises will remain independent, and Adobe will not merge it back into the base model. Enterprises will own all the generated content.

Adobe will provide the Foundry version of Firefly through its API solution, Firefly Services. Elsakr compared AI Foundry to a consulting service, where Adobe will directly collaborate with enterprise customers to retrain the model. This process is called deep tuning, meaning Adobe will make more in-depth adjustments to the base model, not just simple fine-tuning. By working with enterprises, Adobe will identify the required data, securely transmit and process this data, and then start pre-training the model.

Notably, Adobe's Foundry version will not be a small or streamlined model; additional data provided by enterprises usually expands the parameters of Firefly. Home Depot and Walt Disney Imagineering are among the first customers of Adobe AI Foundry, stating that Adobe's AI Foundry will bring innovative solutions for improving customer experiences and simplifying creative workflows.

Enterprises often fine-tune large language models to better suit their needs. Most organizations perform fine-tuning themselves, starting the retraining process by connecting to an API. Elsakr said some companies may have three versions of Firefly: the Foundry version for most projects, a custom Firefly for specific single concepts, and the base Firefly to meet the team's need for a model with less enterprise knowledge.
