Recently, the US AI search startup Perplexity AI, which has received investment from NVIDIA, officially launched an AI browser called Comet, aiming to challenge the market leader Google Chrome. With the rapid development of AI technology, how to use these intelligent agents to redefine the online experience has become a fierce competition in the tech industry.

The core feature of Comet browser is the pre-installed Perplexity AI search, which can generate AI summaries based on search results and work together with the AI assistant Comet Assistant that operates in sync with the browser. According to the latest review, the AI assistant may be the main selling point of the Comet browser, as users can use the AI search function simply by opening a web page. The AI assistant of Comet can intelligently identify the content users are browsing and answer related questions about social media posts, web videos, or online documents, thus saving users the step of copying content to a chatbot.
Perplexity stated that the purpose of the AI assistant is to help users automate daily tasks, such as summarizing the current web page content, planning routes, finding emails, summarizing calendar items, and conducting in-depth research. Similar to OpenAI's Operator intelligent agent, the AI assistant of Comet can "browse the internet on behalf of the user," including automatically opening websites and completing appointments. In a demonstration video, a user used a voice command to ask the browser to find a video where NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang demonstrated Perplexity's product, which not only showed that the browser supports voice input but also highlighted the efficiency and potential of AI search.
Currently, the Comet browser will be available first to Perplexity users who pay $200 per month, and later will also gradually invite users on the registration list to experience it. Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity, said in March that the core purpose of launching the AI browser was to directly reach users and reduce reliance on mainstream browsers. His vision is to create an operating system that can handle almost all tasks, allowing Perplexity's AI to seamlessly collaborate between applications and websites.
Although Perplexity's AI services have many competitive advantages, there are similar products in the market. For example, The Browser Company launched an AI browser called DIA in June, whose core functions are similar to Comet. In addition, Google is continuously investing in AI search, and there are rumors that OpenAI is considering launching its own browser.
According to StatCounter data, Google Chrome holds 68% of the global market share, far exceeding other browsers such as Apple Safari, Microsoft Edge, and Firefox. Perplexity was founded in 2022, and due to the popularity of AI search, the company's valuation rapidly increased from $3 billion to $9 billion in the past year. Recent reports indicate that Perplexity is planning to raise $500 million at a valuation of $14 billion.
