According to recent reports, Google seems to be facing new challenges in the field of generative artificial intelligence. Despite having strong cloud computing capabilities and abundant talent resources, Google is often seen as being at a disadvantage compared to Microsoft and OpenAI. Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, once pointed out that Google had missed opportunities in the AI field, which triggered a strong response from Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet, Google's parent company.
However, the latest news shows that in the cooperation with Scale AI, contractors may have used ChatGPT data to enhance the performance of its AI product Bard, which has since been renamed Gemini. According to internal documents obtained by Business Insider, Scale AI's contractors collected a large number of responses from ChatGPT and compared them with Bard's outputs. The purpose of this process was to improve Bard's answer quality so that it could at least match the level of ChatGPT.
The contractors were given the goal of surpassing GPT-4, and if their responses made ChatGPT look inferior, they could earn an additional 15% bonus. This practice has sparked controversy because OpenAI's terms of service explicitly prohibit using its content to train rival models. In response, Scale AI quickly denied these allegations, stating that it never used ChatGPT's responses to train Gemini or any other model, calling these documents "standard comparative evaluations," and emphasizing that this practice is common in the industry.
At the same time, Google's relationship with Scale AI is under pressure. Recently, Meta plans to partially acquire Scale AI for $14.3 billion, gaining a 49% stake, which will raise Scale AI's market valuation to $29 billion. Meta also hired Alexander Wang, founder of Scale AI, to lead its new Superintelligence division. Due to this acquisition plan, Google appears dissatisfied with its cooperation with Scale AI and rumors suggest that Google may terminate its partnership with Scale AI. Google is Scale AI's largest client and originally planned to pay up to $200 million by 2025 for access to its manually annotated training data to support the development of Gemini.
