Snapchat recently announced an expanded partnership with Google Cloud, focusing on enhancing the generative AI capabilities of Snapchat's My AI chatbot. Through this collaboration, My AI will be able to leverage the multimodal capabilities of Google's Gemini AI to understand and process a variety of information, including text, audio, images, and video. At Snap's annual partner summit, Snapchat showcased Gemini-powered features.
The police in New Mexico, USA, used AI-generated images of a virtual 14-year-old girl to lure sexual offenders, aiming to investigate the protection of children from sexual exploitation on the Snapchat platform. This method has sparked discussions on ethics, legality, and AI ethics, particularly regarding the legality of AI-generated images, privacy rights, and consent issues. Legal experts point out that creating and using deepfake child sexual abuse material is illegal and concerning. Moreover, the requirement for real children's images as training datasets for AI-generated images raises concerns about children.
Snapchat Plus members can create and send images using the AI-generated image feature based on text prompts. Users can click the 'AI' button on the right side of the camera interface to select text prompts or predefined options, such as 'Future Disco' or 'Rocket Ready for Launch.' The new AI features include filling in backgrounds with AI to make the subjects of the photos appear farther from the camera, and adding theme transformations to photos via the 'Dreams' feature. Snapchat Plus members can receive one free package containing eight 'Dreams' per month.
