According to Bloomberg, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang is traveling in Europe, announcing on the 13th an additional $2 billion (approximately RMB 13.41 billion) investment on top of previous commitments. This is not a one-time move—he revealed that NVIDIA has already invested $8 billion (about RMB 53.64 billion) in Europe over the past year, and this is just a continuation of the effort. As the world's largest AI chipmaker, Huang has pledged to invest thousands of billions of dollars worldwide, both to accelerate AI applications and to boost demand for its own chips.
During this trip, he met with French President Macron, discussing topics including investments in France, open-source software, and AI safety. The two sides also confirmed that Huang would visit London and Berlin on his way. At the first event in Paris, he made a strong statement: "Europe must join this competition."
Investing in Open Source and Physical AI, Four French Companies Enter
The direction of the move is clear: Huang is pushing Europe to catch up with the U.S. by using open-source models, arguing that open weights are cheaper and can be customized according to language and "technological sovereignty" needs. NVIDIA has been a key partner of French Mistral AI—both investing money and providing chips. The latter developed its latest model Le Chonk using 4,000 Grace Blackwell chips. This time, he also invested in four other French startups: Doctolib, a medical appointment platform; Pigment, an enterprise AI management software company; Entalpic, which uses AI for chemical materials; and Genesis AI, which focuses on robot technology.
It's clear that Huang wants to bind Europe to NVIDIA's track through capital, reducing market reliance on a few American giants and paving the way for "physical AI"—he predicts that the next gold mine, represented by humanoid robots, is waiting for NVIDIA to mine. However, as European public opposition grows over concerns about model失控 and data center power consumption, it remains uncertain whether this gamble will gain understanding.
