Meta launched its new generation of flagship AI models, Muse Wonder and Muse Wonder Full, on Monday local time, stating its intention to catch up with Anthropic and OpenAI. According to test results provided by Meta, the scores of these two models in reasoning, writing, and coding have approached the top level of Anthropic.
This move follows Zuckerberg's department restructuring last year. After development setbacks, he reorganized the AI landscape, gradually introducing new models and products to Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, which together have 3.5 billion users. The previous AI agent application Muse can perform various software operations for users, and it reached the top of the app store within weeks of its launch. In response to industry concerns about agent失控 and system intrusion, Zuckerberg deliberately told a differentiated story: although the architecture is similar to competitors', he emphasized that AI should empower users, not create dangers.
The "Watermelon" Codename Revealed, Launch Was Delayed
Muse Wonder was developed by Alexander Wang, the chief AI officer who joined in June last year and founder of Scale AI. It is the second-generation model under Wang's leadership and also Meta's first product openly claiming to "match the cutting edge"—such models usually require significant computing power. Soon, it will provide support for some features of the Muse application; the stronger Wonder Full will only be available to advanced Muse Code subscribers. Both models, internally codenamed "Watermelon," have significantly improved code capabilities, while the AI programming market is currently dominated by Anthropic and OpenAI, and Meta is trying to expand its business to the enterprise sector.
The development was not without obstacles: according to The New York Times, Meta had once halted pre-training in July, forcing the release to be postponed until this month. Last weekend, Zuckerberg announced new products during an Instagram live stream while grilling meat, and mentioned "there's a big watermelon on the menu."
