Mark Gurman released today's Power On newsletter, revealing more details about OpenAI's first self-developed AI hardware. The product is about the size of a hockey puck (diameter approximately 7.62 cm, volume about 115.8 cubic cm), with a "donut" shape, and is estimated to be priced between $300 and $400 (approximately 2,029 to 2,705 Chinese yuan). It is expected to be released in 2027.
This device is essentially a "smart speaker without a screen," designed for home use, allowing users to carry it around the house with one hand. The product was developed in collaboration between OpenAI and Jony Ive, former Apple designer.

In terms of hardware, Gurman revealed that the device features moving parts, some of which can move automatically to indicate that the device is responding or interacting with the user. In addition, it will also include lighting, a camera system, and other sensors.
In terms of interaction, the device operates similarly to the voice mode of ChatGPT on mobile devices, but will use a more advanced model to support interactions closer to human conversation. This means that OpenAI is extending its experience in conversational AI from the software layer to a hardware platform.
This is OpenAI's first self-developed AI hardware. Previously, the company had launched an AI programming keyboard in collaboration, but this is a truly self-developed hardware product. Gurman's revelations outline a picture of an AI device positioned as a family companion, emphasizing natural voice interaction, and featuring a compact and portable form factor.
