Anthropic Joins Frontier Alliance, Becomes the First AI Startup to Focus on Carbon Removal

Artificial intelligence startup Anthropic announced on June 17, 2026, that it has officially joined the carbon removal organization Frontier, contributing a new round of financing worth $915 million. As the first pure artificial intelligence company to join this alliance, Anthropic's move not only achieved its first climate-related transaction, but also nearly doubled Frontier's total committed amount to $1.8 billion. To date, the organization has signed contracts for nearly $700 million in over 50 projects, including direct air capture and enhanced rock weathering, aiming to remove 1.8 million tons of carbon.

Currently, the artificial intelligence industry is caught in an intense energy asset arms race. The high energy consumption caused by AI model training and data center operations is putting the climate commitments of tech giants to a severe test. Previously, Anthropic had not yet released a sustainability report, and its "diversified" energy strategy had raised concerns about its purchase of polluting energy sources. This move into Frontier reflects a key shift in the company's clean energy strategy. As many emissions that cannot be completely eliminated (such as air travel) still exist, tech companies are widely using carbon removal credits approved by Frontier to offset their publicly disclosed carbon footprints.
