Recently, the WeChat AI team has achieved significant breakthroughs on the international academic stage. The team's Pattern Recognition Center won the Best Industrial Paper Award at the ICASSP 2026 International Conference held in Barcelona, Spain, with an innovative academic achievement.
Notably, since its establishment in 2016, the winners of this award have almost always been foreign tech giants. This time, WeChat team's win marks the first time a Chinese company team has broken through in this award.
Innovative Model Empowers Mobility for the Visually Impaired
The winning paper focuses on the safety of mobility for people with visual impairments. In the paper, the WeChat team proposed a new vision-language model called WalkVLM-LR, specifically designed to assist visually impaired individuals. The core innovation lies in effectively reducing information redundancy.
The technical team not only solved the pain points of traditional models that "talk too much" and "talk too frequently," but also cleverly addressed the key issue of "when to remind," allowing the assistive device to speak only when truly needed.
Responsive and Feasible for Practical Application
Regarding concerns about technical latency, a relevant WeChat staff member publicly responded that the system's overall latency has already been successfully controlled within the range of hundreds of milliseconds. This is mainly due to the collaborative work between the environmental perception evaluator and the shared visual encoder, significantly shortening the user's waiting time.
Although there is still some room for optimization before the technology can be commercially deployed, its demonstrated real-time performance already has high practical value. It is expected to provide visually impaired people with a more intelligent and smooth mobility experience in the future.
