At the Google I/O event held on Tuesday, Google announced its largest transformation of the search function since its launch over 25 years ago. The era of the "ten blue links" has officially ended, replaced by a new, AI-driven, and highly interactive search experience.

The core of this upgrade is the redesigned "Smart Search Box." The new search box will feature an AI-powered query suggestion system and automatically expand to accommodate longer, more conversational complex queries, without requiring users to select any specific mode before searching.

Here are the three core highlights of this Google search upgrade:

  • Generative User Interface (UI): Google collaborated with the DeepMind team to introduce a dynamic visual system driven by Gemini Flash3.5. For example, when users search for "black holes in space," the search results will no longer just be web links but interactive widgets and visual effects that dynamically build based on follow-up questions.

  • 24/7 "Information Agents": Users can create and customize multiple intelligent agents that run in the background continuously. These agents not only track online updates like an upgraded "Google Alerts" but also understand the meaning behind data (such as real-time financial data) and provide comprehensive updates to users when specific parameters are met.

  • Customizable "Mini-Apps": With the new intelligent agent development platform Google Antigravity, users can directly use natural language commands to build stateful, personalized applications using their own data (such as calendar information), such as meal planning or fitness planning tools.

Currently, Google's AI overview feature has over 2.5 billion monthly active users, and the conversational search mode has also exceeded 1 billion monthly active users. Google CEO Sundar Pichai stated that the company is committed to delivering advanced models that are more powerful, faster, and cheaper to achieve widespread adoption of the technology.

Launch Timeline:

The new smart search box was officially launched this week, and the AI overview now supports asking follow-up questions in AI mode; the "Generative User Interface" will be freely available to all users this summer. The "mini-app" building features and "information agents" based on Antigravity will first be available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscription users this summer, with long-term plans to eventually offer features like personal AI agents "Spark" for free.

However, this major shift is expected to further reduce traffic for publishers and media websites that rely on advertising, and the industry ecosystem will face accelerated restructuring.
