Recently, AI giant Anthropic announced the public beta version of Claude for Word. With this, Claude has successfully integrated into Microsoft Office's "three major" applications within half a year, completing its full ecosystem layout from Excel, PowerPoint to Word. In this new version, Anthropic has positioned the "Track Changes" feature as a core selling point, aiming to build a moat in rigorous industries such as law and finance.
However, the so-called "Track Changes" is not an original invention of AI. As a fundamental function that Word and WPS have used for over two decades, Anthropic's approach is to directly attach AI-generated revision suggestions to the existing review mechanism: the original text is struck through, and the suggested content is presented in an inserted format. This strategy of "old bottle with new wine" essentially aims to better integrate AI into professional office scenarios.
Different Paths, Same Destination: The Debate on Integration and Convergence
In the competition of AI office tools, Claude and WPS AI have shown completely different evolutionary logic. Claude emphasizes the "AI-native office experience," connecting Word, Excel, and PPT through API interfaces to achieve cross-application context sharing. Although the vision is grand, in practice, there are unavoidable delays and compatibility issues during API switching between different applications.
In contrast, WPS AI takes a more pragmatic "integration" approach. Based on a single application architecture, users can complete tasks ranging from data extraction to document generation and PPT summaries without switching between applications. This approach of embedding AI within a single product significantly reduces user account switching costs and format loss.
Localization Advantages: Evolution from Passive Instructions to Active Perception
Aside from interaction logic, scenario awareness has become another key factor in the competition. Currently, Claude mainly relies on user input-driven commands, i.e., "user asks, AI answers." However, WPS AI, which has been deeply rooted in the local market for years, has begun to evolve towards scenario awareness. For example, when a user opens a specific legal contract or financial statement, the AI can automatically identify the document type and proactively prompt for risk review or fluctuation analysis.
This difference reflects a competition in data accumulation. Local office tools have deeper data and scenario knowledge in vertical areas such as Chinese contract corpora, official documents formats, and domestic financial standards.
Conclusion: Model Intelligence Is Not the Only Measure of Efficiency
Claude entering Word is undoubtedly a milestone in the global AI office race, representing the strong intervention of general large models into traditional workflows. However, the ultimate value of office tools always lies in improving efficiency.
