After the "Crab" OpenClaw solution became popular, AI search startup Perplexity followed closely and officially launched a cloud-based AI agent service called Personal Computer. The core innovation lies in using a continuously running Apple Mac mini as a local pivot point, integrating the user's local files, applications, and Perplexity's cloud AI capabilities to build a dedicated intelligent assistant system that is available 24/7.
Unlike traditional "question-and-answer" AI interactions, the design of Personal Computer aims to act as an experienced "AI project manager." Users no longer need to issue fragmented commands to multiple tools; instead, they simply need to inform the system of the desired final outcome. The system will then automatically break down complex tasks into sub-tasks and assign them to different sub-AI agents for execution. When handling specific scenarios like images, it can independently complete the entire workflow, from content analysis, renaming, to resizing. To balance automation efficiency with privacy and security, Perplexity has established strict protective mechanisms. Although the client runs on the user's local Mac, the heavy computing tasks are still completed on protected servers. The system requires that all operations involving sensitive permissions must be authorized by the user through a secondary manual approval, and all operation records will be fully retained. Additionally, to handle potential unexpected situations, the system includes an "emergency shutdown switch," ensuring users maintain absolute final control over AI behavior.
