Boston Dynamics announced at the 2026 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) that its humanoid robot Atlas will officially enter commercial production. This news has attracted widespread attention, as Atlas will be deployed in large quantities in the manufacturing facilities of Hyundai Motor Group. Hyundai Motor is a major shareholder of Boston Dynamics and plans to start deploying Atlas in its robotic "meta-factory" center in the coming months.

Hyundai Motor announced a $26 billion investment plan for U.S. manufacturing last year, which also includes a factory capable of producing 30,000 robots per year, many of which are expected to be Atlas robots. Boston Dynamics has also partnered with Google DeepMind to integrate Gemini Robotics' AI foundation model into Atlas, aiming to enhance the robot's intelligence level.

Although Boston Dynamics' Atlas robot was not publicly disclosed before 2024, the company emphasized that with the rapid development of artificial intelligence technology, it has become possible to significantly improve the training and application speed of robots. Compared to Tesla's Optimus robot, Atlas has made significant progress in multiple areas. Tesla had promised to produce thousands of Optimus robots before 2025, but this has not yet been achieved.

The commercial version of Atlas is capable of autonomous learning and acquiring knowledge from its environment, featuring 360-degree vision, which allows it to identify people around it and pause work when necessary, ensuring safety. In addition, Atlas's design takes into account the safety of working alongside humans, with an optimized structure that reduces potential risks to human operators.

Robert Playter, CEO of Boston Dynamics, stated that the launch of Atlas will revolutionize industrial production and lay the foundation for future home robots. The company has over a decade of experience in robot R&D and is confident in the successful commercialization of Atlas.
