Recently, Mistral AI officially released its second generation of open-source coding model family, named Devstral2 and Devstral Small2. These two new models have made significant progress in performance and have also adopted differentiated licensing strategies to meet the needs of users of different scales.
The flagship model Devstral2 has as many as 12.3 billion parameters. In the industry-known SWE-Bench Verified benchmark test, Devstral2 achieved a score of 72.2%, surpassing the performance of many similar open-source models. Mistral AI stated that Devstral2 excels in cost-effectiveness, with an operational cost seven times lower than that of the competitor Claude Sonnet. However, using this model still requires high-performance hardware support, specifically four H100-level GPUs to ensure smooth operation.
At the same time, Devstral Small2, as a model with relatively fewer parameters, has 24 billion parameters and is designed for optimized operation on standard hardware. This lightweight model demonstrates excellent performance-to-size ratio, fully showcasing its efficiency.
Mistral AI has adopted different licensing strategies for the two models. Devstral Small2 uses a free Apache 2.0 license, allowing wide usage. The flagship model Devstral2 uses a "modified MIT license" with a revenue cap. Specifically, for companies with monthly revenue exceeding $20 million, when using the original version of Devstral2 or its fine-tuned or derivative versions, they must purchase a commercial license or access it through an API.
In addition to the release of the new models, Mistral AI also launched an open-source command-line tool called Mistral Vibe. This tool allows developers to automatically modify code and fix errors in multiple files through natural language, aiming to improve work efficiency and achieve workflow automation.
Devstral2 is currently available for free via API, and the future pricing is expected to be $0.40 per million input tokens. This series of innovations will bring more convenience to developers and promote the advancement of coding technology.
