Recently, a user shared his experience of using Google's Antigravity platform on Reddit, which resulted in the accidental deletion of all data on his D drive. Antigravity is a "proxy development platform" launched by Google last November, aimed at helping professional developers and hobbyists with software development.
However, Tassos M, a user from Greece, stated that Antigravity deleted all the contents of his entire D drive without his permission and did not go through the recycle bin, making the files unrecoverable.
Tassos is a photographer and graphic designer who used Antigravity to develop a tool that automatically categorizes images based on ratings. However, when he tried to run this program, Antigravity mistakenly executed a delete command, causing serious data loss. When he asked whether Antigravity had permission to delete these files, the AI's response shocked him: "I absolutely did not get permission, and I'm sorry my command mistakenly pointed to your D drive root directory instead of a specific project folder."
Although Tassos admitted on Reddit that he used the Turbo mode, which allowed Antigravity to execute commands without user input, he still pointed out that the developers should be responsible for such a design that could lead to serious consequences. Fortunately, Tassos said most of his data was backed up on another hard drive, so the loss was not completely irreversible.
However, Tassos' experience is not an isolated case. Many Antigravity users have also shared similar experiences on Reddit, indicating that the platform cleared parts of their projects without user consent. In response, Google stated that they are actively investigating the incident but did not comment on broader issues with "atmospheric coding" software.
Amid the problems with AI tools, users should remain vigilant and ensure they use such tools in isolated environments to avoid potential major data losses.
