Vercel is a cloud platform company founded in 2015, providing tools for developers to build and deploy websites and applications. Recently, the company decided to train artificial intelligence (AI) agents to improve the efficiency of its sales team, reducing the original 10-person sales team to just one person and a robot. Vercel's new strategy aims to free employees from routine tasks, allowing them to focus on more creative and valuable work.
The company's Chief Operating Officer, Jenny DeWitt Goss, said that training the AI agent started in June this year. She led three engineers on an internal project focusing on the company's top-performing sales representative, recording their workflow. After six weeks of tracking and observation, the team successfully developed an AI agent that imitated the work model of that sales representative. Now, this "master agent" can automatically handle a large amount of work that was previously done by multiple sales representatives, including reviewing inbound messages, filtering spam, qualifying leads, etc. The agent also collects company information through the internal database and OpenAI's Deep Research tool, drafts personalized responses, and automatically forwards support inquiries.
Human managers review the AI agent's work on Slack and provide feedback to help the system continuously learn and improve. Since deployment, the AI agent has helped Vercel reduce a 10-person team to one person, with the remaining nine employees moving to more challenging and complex external expansion work. Goss stated that this change is not about layoffs; in fact, the company has increased its workforce over the past year.
Currently, Vercel has deployed six AI agents and plans to launch hundreds more over the next 6 to 12 months. These agents are all developed based on the work patterns of the company's top employees. Goss emphasized that ultimately, human employees will focus on more creative and intellectually challenging work rather than tedious and repetitive tasks.
