OpenAI recently announced a partnership with payment giant PayPal, deeply integrating payment capabilities into the ChatGPT chat interface. This collaboration is based on Google's Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), allowing users to complete payments directly through their PayPal account within the conversation interface in the future.
This integration is the latest move by OpenAI into the e-commerce field. According to PayPal, starting from 2026, ChatGPT will support users in searching and directly purchasing products from "tens of millions of merchants."
On the technical level, PayPal supports Google's ACP protocol, enabling ChatGPT to seamlessly integrate its payment functionality. In addition to payments through PayPal accounts, credit card payments will also be processed through PayPal's own API.
For merchants, the most attractive aspect of this collaboration is that no additional technical integration is required. The registration function can be used immediately, and PayPal will handle all payment verification and processing workflows behind the scenes. This means that ChatGPT can quickly expand its application in conversational commerce, accelerating its goal of making AI a shopping agent.
