Less than a month after its launch, and still in invitation-only mode only available in the US and Canada, OpenAI's AI video generation app Sora has already accumulated 2 million downloads, firmly securing the top spot on the App Store. Now, this phenomenon-level product is accelerating its evolution — Bill Peebles, head of Sora, announced on the X platform on October 22 that a series of major updates will be rolled out in the "next few days," covering three dimensions: character expansion, video editing, and social interaction, and confirmed that the Android version is "coming soon."

The most eye-catching new feature is the full release of the "Cameo" function. Previously, users needed to upload a selfie video to generate their own AI digital avatar for others to use in creating videos; now, this capability will extend to pets, stuffed toys, and almost any object. "You can turn your dog, hamster, favorite toy, or almost anything into a cameo," said Peebles. To cope with the massive creative characters that will emerge, Sora will display "popular cameos" in real-time on the generation interface, making it easier for users to discover and use them.

At the same time, Sora is introducing basic video editing features for the first time, initially supporting the assembly of multiple AI-generated clips into a complete video, with more tools like editing and transitions to be added in the future. The social experience is also being restructured: the team is developing community-based exclusive channels, allowing users to collaborate and share content within private spaces such as universities, companies, and sports clubs in the future, driving Sora from a personal entertainment tool toward a group co-creation platform.

In response to some users' feedback about "too strict review processes," OpenAI is optimizing its content moderation strategy, reducing false positives while ensuring safety, and simultaneously improving the overall performance and generation speed of the application.

Although the exact release date for the Android version has not been announced, the Google Play pre-registration page is already open. Considering Sora's explosive growth on iOS — monthly active users exceeded one million under the invitation-only system — once it is fully launched and available on Android, it could ignite a global AI video creation trend.

From "generating yourself" to "generating everything," Sora is pushing AI video towards a new stage that is more personalized, more social, and more user-friendly. And this visual creation revolution led by OpenAI has just begun.
