Microsoft recently announced that the Copilot app in Windows 11 (and Windows 10) now fully supports the AI mode powered by GPT-5. This new feature started rolling out on August 7 and is now widely available in the United States and other regions, attracting a lot of user attention.
The writing box of the Copilot app uses "Web routing" technology, which allows it to automatically identify and extract the new model from Azure. This design means users can easily enable the "smart" or GPT-5 mode without updating the app. Compared to OpenAI's implementation, Microsoft's Copilot has more lenient usage restrictions. Specifically, free accounts on ChatGPT can send a maximum of 10 prompts to GPT-5 before switching to a weaker model (GPT-5-mini), while Copilot appears to be more generous in this aspect.
Additionally, GPT-5 supports reasoning, automatically deciding whether to perform reasoning when answering questions and routing the query to the model's "thinking" endpoint. Compared to ChatGPT, free accounts on ChatGPT are limited to one thinking message per day, while ChatGPT Plus requires a $20 monthly fee to enjoy higher sending limits.
In testing, Copilot's GPT-5 smart mode showed high usage rates, and users rarely felt the presence of usage limits. Although it is currently unclear what the daily usage limit for Copilot is, testing showed that it could switch to the "thinking" mode five times in a day. Through complex problem testing, Copilot performed well, accurately answering various questions raised by users and successfully requesting GPT-5 thinking in multiple attempts.
Accessing GPT-5 through Copilot is very simple. Users just need to open copilot.microsoft.com in a browser or download the Copilot app from the Microsoft Store on their PC. After logging into a Microsoft account, the smart mode will activate automatically. If the mode is not visible, users may need to wait a little.
