Recently, OpenAI has reached a new agreement with Oracle to expand the Stargate project's data center capacity in the United States by 4.5 gigawatts, bringing the total capacity over 5 gigawatts. This important development marks a significant step forward for OpenAI on its path to achieving a 10-gigawatt capacity goal by 2029.

The Stargate project aims to position the United States as a leading force in global artificial intelligence development. The project received support from former President Trump, who publicly mentioned his hope to provide $50 billion in funding for the project by 2029. However, achieving such a large-scale goal requires not only government support but also collaboration among major technology companies and international investors.

The Stargate project was officially announced in January 2025, with negotiations beginning in 2022, and it has now attracted key participants from multiple technology and investment fields. OpenAI, as a core participant in the project, is responsible for developing and providing technical support for the leading generative AI platform, ChatGPT. Oracle also plays a key role in the Stargate project, and through this agreement, further advances the project's implementation.

In addition to OpenAI and Oracle, SoftBank, as one of the early participants, is responsible for managing the project's investments and funds, and both have committed to providing $19 billion in support for the Stargate project. The startup company Crusoe, based in Denver, is responsible for constructing and setting up the Stargate data centers, while the UAE-based AI investment company MGX has contributed approximately $7 billion to the project.

In terms of technical support, ARM is responsible for designing energy-efficient CPU architectures, while Microsoft serves as a key technology and cloud computing provider, despite not being mentioned initially in the project. NVIDIA is the main hardware supplier for the Stargate project and plans to deploy no fewer than 64,000 GPUs by 2026.

OpenAI stated in its blog that the additional 4.5 gigawatts of data center capacity is expected to create more than 100,000 jobs related to construction and operation. With billions of dollars invested, a coalition of global technology leaders, and coordinated efforts from the government, the Stargate project is gradually becoming one of the most ambitious AI infrastructure initiatives in American history. The scale and goals of this project aim not only to accelerate the domestic adoption of AI but also to make an impact in the global AI landscape.
