OpenAI Postpones Sora API Release: Limited Capacity and Potential Missed Opportunity

OpenAI recently stated that there are currently no plans to release its AI video generation model, the Sora API. The Sora model is capable of generating quite realistic videos based on text descriptions or reference images.

During an AMA (Ask Me Anything) event with the OpenAI developer team, Romain Huet, the Director of Developer Experience at OpenAI, clearly stated that the Sora API is not currently in the plans. “We do not have plans for the Sora API at this time,” he wrote.

The reason for this decision may be related to capacity issues. Shortly after the launch of the video creation and editing suite powered by Sora, OpenAI was forced to close the application channel due to traffic exceeding expectations. OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, apologized for this on X.

Altman wrote, “We severely underestimated the demand for Sora. It will take some time to make it accessible to everyone. We are working hard to figure out how to do this as quickly as possible!”

OpenAI resumed registrations for Sora a few days ago.

Choosing not to prioritize the development of the Sora API may put OpenAI at a disadvantage in competition with major rival Google. At the beginning of December, Google launched a limited access API for its video generation model, Veo. This week, Google announced that the successor to Veo, Veo2 (which gained popularity for its impressively high-quality output), will receive an API sometime in 2025.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has also provided an API for its recently launched Nova Reel video model. Additionally, many startups focused on generative video have also made APIs available for their models. One such company, Runway, claims that its API has been used by “the world's largest consumer technology companies to reliably generate millions of videos for their users.”

OpenAI's postponement of the Sora API release undoubtedly presents opportunities for other competitors, while also highlighting the challenges of AI video generation technology in terms of capacity. How to meet the growing market demand while ensuring quality will be a shared challenge for all AI companies.
